Providence Health & Services Maintenance Engineer Building Operations *0.5 FTE, Variable Shift* in Spokane, Washington


Providence is calling a Maintenance Engineer Building Operations (Plant Operations, Variables, 0.5 FTE, 20 hours per week) to Providence Holy Family Hospital in Spokane, Washington. In this position you will:

  • Accept and support the mission and values of Holy Family Hospital.

  • Repair and maintain all systems within the hospital such as: Air conditioning/refrigeration/chilled water systems, control air/medical air systems, medical gas/vacuum systems, electrical/mechanical beds, electrical switch gear, motor control centers, air handling units, pneumatic controls, pneumatic tube system, and kitchen equipment.

  • Operate and maintain gas/oil-fired boilers and associated auxiliary equipment, such as boiler feed pumps, water softeners, air compressors, boiler oil pumps, emergency generators/standby electric systems, and direct digital controllers.

  • Make rounds on boilers, boiler room equipment, chillers, mechanical rooms, and tube system. Records boiler/equipment data as required in log book and/or in equipment log sheets. Analyzes such readings and makes necessary corrections to insure safe and comfortable conditions within the hospital.

  • Trouble-shoot assigned machinery and mechanical equipment, using hand and power tools and appropriate test equipment.

  • Evaluate malfunctioning conditions and initiates repairs in accordance with prints, diagrams, sketches, operational manuals, and manufacturers’ specifications.

  • Carry out scheduled preventive maintenance procedures and corrects any discrepancies found.

  • Initiate requests for procurement of repair parts and completes the repairs.

  • Maintain cleanliness of boiler room, shop areas, and assigned mechanical areas throughout the hospital.

  • Test boiler feedwater, condensates, and cooling tower water and adds chemicals to treat within limits and initiates blow down of boilers.

  • Possess initiative and judgment to determine operating conditions and be able to meet emergency situations.

  • Consistently fills out trouble tickets completed on a daily basis.

  • Demonstrate responsibility for oiling and greasing moving mechanisms, maintaining proper water conditions in boilers, and cleaning boilers, and related equipment.

  • Demonstrate the ability to perform duties that vary frequently, according to assignment.

  • Regularly constructs, repairs and maintains all structures, furniture, walls, and other elements of the hospital.

  • Consistently completes assignments in time-frame set by supervisor/director. Consistently seeks a standard of work that is equal to or above that which is required.

  • Complete work left from other shifts and assists others as requested.

  • Continually strives to make the best use of time during the assigned shift through careful coordination of daily tasks; reduces non-essential interruptions to an absolute minimum in order to complete priority tasks first.

  • Demonstrate the ability to perform in accurate and precise manner in crisis and emergency situations when time is critical.

  • Demonstrate responsibility for the containment of hospital costs and conservation of supplies and equipment.

  • Demonstrate a general knowledge of boilers, pumps, gauges, heating units, hand tools, refrigeration and ventilation equipment, plumbing fixtures and steam distribution systems.

  • Assume responsibility for reading and comprehending all posted minutes and memos.

  • Demonstrate the ability to maintain all equipment in the assigned work area assuring that it is in safe and proper working order.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of emergency procedures, fire drills, evacuation procedures, and internal/external disaster plans and procedures.

  • Demonstrate a thorough knowledge of hand and power tools, precision measurement, and testing instruments.

  • Demonstrate a general knowledge of electricity, plumbing, carpentry, and painting as it relates to various duties.

  • Routinely uses policy and procedures manuals, maintenance procedure manual, and other reference materials, as necessary, to ensure proper course of action.

  • Handle telephone information requests with courtesy, accuracy, and respect; receives information and distributes messages as necessary.

  • Willing to adjust personal schedule in conjunction with the process of departmental scheduling and departmental need.

  • Seek information necessary for accurate completion of job duties; uses reference materials to ensure accuracy.

  • Regularly makes suggestions as to ways to complete assignments easier, quicker, and at less cost.

  • Accept responsibility for the repair and proper orientation of equipment; always maintains equipment in safe working conditions.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • H.S. Diploma or GED

  • Five (5) years experience in maintenance and repair of mechanical systems.

  • Must obtain a valid second or first class Boiler Operator's License issued by city of Spokane within three years.
