Providence Hospital Operator - Evening Shift - $1000 Sign-On Bonus in Spokane, Washington

Providence is calling a Hospital Operator (Communications Attendant) - (Communications, Evening Shift, 1.0 FTE, 40 hours per week) to Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane, Washington. In this position you will:

  • Customer Service:

  • Maintain and promotes positive, open and honest interpersonal relationships with customers (physicians, employees, visitors, patients, and other PSHMC publics)

  • Provide high quality service to all customers; focuses on understanding customers’ needs and follows through

  • Demonstrate respect for the capabilities, different cultures and or personalities of co-workers and Medical Center publics within the mission/values of PSHMC.

  • Communication: Promote and demonstrate effective, open and honest written and verbal communication skills

  • Self Management: Demonstrate self-management behaviors, which reflect a positive image of PSHMC, following established policies and procedures and promote an efficient, cost effective work environment

  • Ownership /Stewardship and Accountability: Demonstrate good stewardship of resources by treating property of customers, Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center and co-workers with care and respect

  • Teamwork: Work cooperatively and collaboratively with all levels of staff and other disciplines for problem solving without blaming

  • Flexibility: Demonstrate flexibility by readily adapting to different situations to complete work

  • Telephone Duties:

  • Answer calls quickly with courtesy and accuracy

  • Distinguish calls between the different facilities and handles appropriately

  • Follow unit policy for reporting problems related to disrupted phone service

  • Ask questions of callers or repeats information to avoid misunderstandings

  • Explain procedures and assists patients making local and long distance calls

  • Assist staff with long distance calls and enters information into log

  • Assist staff and physicians in obtaining permission, via telephone, for treatment following established procedure

  • Accurately establishes and completes conference calls when requested by staff

  • Quickly and courteously supplies general information to callers

  • Always follows established procedure regarding “not to be given out” information

  • Always refers to on-call schedules supplied by various departments and insures that the correct person is called according to the schedule

  • Assist in the location of family members, clergy and other visitors following established procedures

  • Quickly responds to and directs calls, demonstrating a knowledge of extensions, personnel and departments

  • Speak in moderate, courteous tones, keeping remarks appropriate and professional

  • Emergency Alarms:

  • Follow procedure for exchanging regular phones for hearing impaired phones:

  • All emergency alarms

  • Handling bomb threats/disasters

  • Handling fire alarms

  • Handling telephone and/or power outage

  • All emergency medical codes

  • React calmly, using good judgment in any critical situation

  • Review EMERGENCY PROCEDURE MANUAL at least once a month.

  • Knowledge of Equipment:

  • Correctly and efficiently operates the telephone console and its available features

  • Help staff with minor problems related to various models of phones used in the Medical Center

  • Help staff with problems related to voicemail

  • Correctly and efficiently uses all of the available features of the ALPHAMATE

  • Explain the operation of pagers used within the Medical Center to staff

  • Correctly programs in-house pagers for replacements

  • Use the computer for E-mail and word processing to assist the supervisor by typing reports, records and updating procedure changes

  • Use patient census locator on computer to locate patients

  • Correctly enter data into all entry logs

  • Appropriately uses the 2-way radios to contact Facilities and Security

  • Paging:

  • Monitor paging feature to ensure nothing but appropriate paging is heard over the overhead system

  • Follow administrative policy when paging events, meetings or conferences

  • Speak clearly and precisely when paging overhead

  • Select appropriate method of paging when locating physicians

  • Miscellaneous:

  • Follow written and verbal instructions

  • Evaluate calls and handles one-time occurrences appropriately

  • Inform supervisor when difficult problem occurs

  • Utilize office resources, instructional manuals, memos, directives, and the daily information logs in order to give correct and appropriate information

  • Follow unit policies regarding food and drink, personal visitors, or phone calls

  • Willingly assist Medical Center departments with simple projects


Preferred qualifications for this position includes:

  • Previous multiple line telephone system experience

  • Computer experience
