Providence Health & Services CNA/NAC - Resident Care Attendant - Residential Care (Full-time, Evenings) in Spokane, Washington


Providence is calling a Resident Care Attendant (Residential Care, Evening Shift, 1.0 FTE) to Providence Emilie Court Assisted Living in Spokane, Washington. In this position you will:


  • Record all entries on flow sheets, notes, charts, etc., in an informative and descriptive manner

  • Use only authorized abbreviations established by this facility when recording information

  • Report all accidents and incidents you observe on the shift that they occur

  • Answer telephone in a professional manner, record complete messages, and relay to proper channels

  • Monitor for environmental hazards


  • Ensure that the resident’s apt is ready for receiving the resident with the name at the door of apt

  • Greet residents and escort them to their apartment

  • Introduce resident to other residents and personnel as appropriate

  • Assist with making resident feel welcome

  • Assist residents with packing their personal possessions when they are being discharged as requested by resident or family

  • Escort residents to lobby as needed

  • Assist with loading/unloading residents from vehicles as necessary


  • Perform all assigned tasks in accordance with our established policies and procedures, and as instructed by your supervisors

  • Follow work assignments, and/or work schedules in completing and performing your assigned tasks

  • Cooperate with inter-departmental personnel, as well as other facility personnel to ensure that nursing services can be adequately maintained to meet the needs of the residents

  • Create and maintain an atmosphere of warmth, personal interest and positive emphasis, as well as a calm environment throughout the unit and shift

  • Meet with your shift’s nursing personnel, on a regularly scheduled basis, to assist in identifying and correcting problem areas, and/or the improvement of services

  • Report all complaints and grievances made by the resident to the Administrator or DON as appropriate

  • Notify the facility when you will be late or absent from work, by speaking directly to administrative staff

  • Report occupational exposures to blood, body fluids, infectious materials, and hazardous chemicals to your superior


  • Participate in and receive the nursing report upon reporting for duty

  • Follow established policies concerning exposure to blood/body fluids

  • Assist residents with daily dental and mouth care (i.e., brushing teeth,/dentures, oral hygiene, special mouth care, etc.) as per Negotiated Service Plan (NSP)

  • Assist residents with shower functions (i.e., bed bath, tub or shower bath, etc.)as directed as per NSP

  • Assist residents with dressing/undressing as necessary per NSP

  • Assist residents with nail care (i.e, clipping, trimming, and cleaning the finger/toenails. Note: does not include diabetic residents per NSP)

  • Assist with shaving male residents per NSP

  • Change bed linens per NSP

  • Make beds per NSP

  • Assist/provide laundry services per NSP

  • Assist resident with bowel and bladder management (i.e., take to bathroom, offer bedpan/urinal, portable commode, etc) per NSP

  • Assist with housekeeping tasks as assigned

  • Collect specimens as instructed (i.e., urine, sputum, stools, etc.)

  • Remind and encourage residents to attend activity and social programs, (i.e, church services, parties, visitors, etc.)

  • Assist in transporting residents to/from appointments, activity and social programs, etc., as necessary

  • Assist residents to walk with or without self-help devices as instructed per NSP

  • Complete and record resident vital signs (weight, BP, pulse, respiration, temp) as instructed

  • Answer resident calls promptly


  • Assist residents with self administration of medications as instructed by RN

  • Follow Nurse Delegation guidelines for dispensing medications

  • Monitor medications, supplies and order as necessary in accordance with established policies

  • Document and report adverse signs and symptoms as instructed by RN

  • Insure narcotic records are accurate for all shifts. Report discrepancies to RN immediately

  • Dispose of medications in accordance with established procedure

  • Notify MD when residents are involved in an accident or incident

  • Receive faxed orders from MD, notify RN and provide information as trained


  • Observe and report to the RN the presence of pressure areas and skin breakdown to prevent decubitus ulcers (bedsores)

  • Report injuries of an unknown source, including skin tears and record in residents notes

  • Provide daily perineal care as requested and noted on NSP

  • Assist with the application of slings, elastic bandages, binders, etc. as noted on NSP

  • Monitor disoriented residents. Record and report data as instructed

  • Turn all non - self-medications found in the resident’s apartment /possession over to the RN

  • Watch for and report any change in room temperature, ventilation, lighting, etc. to maintenance


  • Assist residents to meals as requested

  • Introduce resident to other residents at the table. Serve beverages and meals. Assist to cut food, supervision, etc. as requested

  • Report changes in the resident’s eating habits and report to the Administrator and DON

  • Encourage resident fluid intake or monitor if on fluid restrictions

  • May be requested to update family of significant changes in condition (i.e. incidents, death)

  • Follow up with funeral home, as needed

  • Provide between meal and bedtime snacks, available from dietary or resident apartment

  • Escort resident to apt as requested by resident and noted on NSP


  • Attend and participate in scheduled training and educational classes to maintain current certification as a Nursing Assistant

  • Attend and participate in scheduled orientation programs and inservices

  • Attend and participate in scheduled inservices for hazard communication, TB management, blood borne pathogens standard, and inservices required for assisted living

  • Attend and participate in advance directive in-service training programs as scheduled


  • Insure proper safety devices are in place and functioning

  • Monitor resident safety as appropriate throughout the shift

  • Participate in appropriate in-service training programs prior to performing tasks that involve potential exposure to blood/body fluids

  • Wash hands before and after performing any service for the resident

  • Keep the nurses’ call system within easy reach of the resident

  • Immediately notify the Nurse Supervisor and the Administrator of any resident leaving/missing from the facility

  • Complete incident report forms as trained

  • Follow established safety precautions in the performance of all duties

  • Keep residents’ personal possessions off the floor and properly stored

  • Keep floors dry. Report spills immediately or wipe them up

  • Keep excess supplies and equipment off the floor. Store in designated areas

  • Perform routine housekeeping duties

  • Report all hazardous conditions and equipment to the Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse immediately

  • Report all safety violations to Administrator

  • Follow established smoking regulations. Report all violations

  • Report any communicable or infectious disease to the Director of Nursing and/or to the Administrator

  • Follow established procedures in the use and disposal of personal protective equipment

  • Wear and/or use safety equipment and supplies (e.g., gait belt, mechanical lifts, etc.), when assisting residents with transfers


  • Use only the equipment you have been trained to use.

  • Use only the equipment and supplies necessary to do the job. Do not be wasteful

  • Inform the Nurse Supervisor/Administrator of your equipment and supply needs


  • Review NSP and notes daily to determine if changes in the resident’s daily care routine have been made on the care plan

  • Inform the team leader of any changes in the resident’s conditions so that appropriate information can be entered on the resident’s NSP

  • Ensure that your notes reflect policy to document by exception


  • Maintain the confidentiality of all resident care information

  • Ensure that you treat all residents fairly, and with kindness, dignity, and respect

  • Ensure that all nursing care is provided in privacy

  • Knock before entering the resident’s apartment

  • Report all grievances and complaints made by the resident to the Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse and Administrator

  • Report all allegations of resident abuse and/or misappropriation of resident property to Administrator

  • Honor the resident’s refusal of treatment request. Report such requests to your supervisor


  • Use appropriate safety guidelines and precautions

  • Demonstrate safe handling skills and use of equipment

  • Participate and demonstrates knowledge of fire and disaster plans

  • Report any equipment safety hazard appropriately

  • Follow universal precaution procedures

  • Observe principles of good body mechanics in resident care activities

  • Demonstrate pro-active approach to patient and facility safety needs

  • Know purpose and location of MSDS information


  • Consistently prompt to resident treatments and meetings

  • Begin work on time

  • Write legibly

  • Meet productivity goals per department standard

  • Sick time does not exceed guidelines

  • Adhere to department dress code

  • Demonstrate a willingness to critique own practice error, documents unusual occurrences and pursues solutions


  • Inform appropriate team members of resident's condition changes, falls, and other problems

  • Communicate goals and plans for care to team members to enhance continuity and coordination of resident care

  • Communicate appropriate information to other team members


  • Request days off/vacation days in accordance with the facility's policy and considers overall department operations when submitting requests

  • Cooperate when asked to adjust schedule to meet patient and department needs, including floating to any area


Required qualifications for this position includes:

  • 7.5 hours AIDS related training needed within 30 days of hire

  • DSHS approved Dementia and Mental Health classes needed within 90 days of hire

  • Must be a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) or a Home Care Aide (HCA) in accordance with laws of Washington State

  • Food Handler's Permit (or must obtain within 14 days of hire)

  • CPR and First Aid Cards needed within 30 days of hire
