Providence Health & Services Senior Software Engineer - Developer Experience in Seattle, Washington


The Digital Innovation Group (DIG) at Providence Sr Joseph Health (PSJH) is a small but mighty product development and incubation team that is building next-gen tools that give patients convenient and easy access to healthcare virtually anywhere, anytime. We’re looking for a passionate and experienced engineer for our Engineering Efficiency team. Engineering Efficiency consists of three groups: Reliability & Engineering (Infrastructure & Ops), Developer Experience (DevEx) Tools, and QA. Specifically, the DevEx team was formed to help bring standardization and improvement in key areas across DIG and ensure that the Infrastructure, Builder Tools and QA functions support quality code and products.

Some of Engineering Efficiency’s current projects:

  • Improve upon developer velocity, scalability and testability across a diverse project areas and platforms

  • Create common development best practices and develop tools to reduce development times

  • Build tools for deploying onto Kubernetes & continue the migration to containerization

  • Making operational experience a part of every team's cultures to raise the quality of the software we build.

As a Software Engineer you will be building those frameworks and tools to help reduce development times and identify and streamline the interdependencies between the teams much earlier in the product development lifecycle. DevEx team members are given the responsibility to determine which scrum teams need the most assistance as well as which efforts would bring the most value to DIG as an organization. DevEx team members are also be accountable for bringing these efforts organization wide and evangelizing their use.

Our Technology:

Current technology includes Swift 4 with preliminary exposure to Kotlin for iOS, Java for Android; React, Node.js and JavaScript for middle-tier & frontend; Java, containers and Kubernetes for our platform & API teams; our database solutions are hosted in AWS primarily using DynamoDB; we use S3 for configuration and storage solutions; WebRTC is used for conferencing solutions; we have fully automated CI/CD pipeline.

Basic Qualifications:

  • B.S. or higher in Computer Science OR equivalent combination of education and relevant experience

  • 6 years of object oriented design and implementation experience including React, Node.js and Javascript

  • 4 years’ experience working with automation tools such as Puppet, Chef, Ansible, XebiaLabs

  • 4 years’ experience supporting Cloud Services such as AWS with tools in line with CloudFormation, CloudTrail, CloudWatch, Elastic Load Balancing, Beanstalk, EC2, Route 53, etc.

  • Experience with “Mobile First”, Responsive Design with HTML and CSS

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience building complex software systems that have been successfully delivered to customers

  • Knowledge of professional software engineering practices & best practices for the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, and operations

  • CI/CD background with architectural knowledge around how the services are constructed

  • Experience in communicating with users, other technical teams, and management to collect requirements, describe software product features, and technical designs

  • Experience with Golang

  • Experience with developing automated internal frameworks, increasing developer and release velocity, improving code health and building developer tools

  • Understanding of microservices architecture
