Providence Health & Services VP, Chief Operating Officer - Physician Enterprise in Renton, Washington


Providence St. Joseph Health is calling for a VP, Chief Administrative Officer - Physician Enterprise to the System Office. The position can be located in etiher Irvine, CA or Seattle, WA.


The VP, CAO Physician Enterprise is responsible for partnering in leading the system-wide operations for PSJH medical groups; including the Medical Group Executive Council, Leadership Council and various other councils and committees. These councils are responsible for oversight and performance improvement, transformation, innovation, ethics and system medical group infrastructure developed to serve all related ministries.

In this position you will:

  • Partner in the formation and leadership of Providence St. Joseph Health Medical Group Executive, Leadership Councils, and related governance councils as required.

  • Develop strategies, systems and structures to maximize the value, expressed by the triple aim that each physician group brings to the community.

  • Work with the team to develop a strong patient and provider identity across the system and strategically integrate at the service area.

  • Establish standardized operational, financial and quality performance benchmarks and measurement methodology as well as short term and long term success metrics and related dashboard.

  • Lead the market assessments of group practice performance.

  • Ensure minimum spec recommendations for regional physician infrastructure.

  • Assess and implement against opportunities for coordinated, standardized and/or centralized infrastructure.

  • Guide priorities and service of existing shared resources such as physician and advance practice professional recruitment, physician compensation and fair market value analysis, physician contracting.

  • Ensure the development of guiding principles and standards for other services as opportunities emerge and oversee implementation and ongoing performance of said services.

  • Monitor physician integration strategies across Providence.

  • Provide consulting resources for development of physician group merger and acquisition transactions.

  • Develop recommendations around new models of care and physician partnership structures.

  • In conjunction with OSBD, develop BOAT MD refinements and participate in ongoing project evaluation.

  • Identification of systems and structures to support excellence in group practice operations. Opportunities could include research, technology assessment, data analysis, negotiations, & due diligence

  • Develop scorekeeping or reporting capabilities to monitor performance and key strategic drivers across PH&S.

  • Provide a forum for knowledge transfer of best practices in physician practice operations and physician integration strategies and ensure rapid adoption within PH&S.

  • Ensure physician recruitment strategies are achieved.

  • In collaboration with the VP of Human Resources, assists in the provision of leadership development initiatives to cultivate physician leaders system-wide.

  • In collaboration with Human Resources leadership, ensure ongoing analysis and standardization of physician compensation and contracts in partnership with regional leaders.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Strongly prefer 10 years’ experience in integrated healthcare delivery where physicians are integrated clinically and operationally. Ability to design, develop and implement highly complex programs, products, technical systems and policies that affect the overall direction of the ACO.

  • Must have proven executive leadership in driving strategy within a large healthcare organization.

  • Formal management training and experience in Quality and Resource Management in health care organizations.

  • Minimum of five to ten years medical practice experience in a physician group practice or clinic setting.

  • Successful experience with, and advocate of, managed health care delivery systems and philosophy is strongly desired.

  • Demonstrates a willingness to commit to the philosophy, mission and values, and goals of the PSJH and their health care system including the ability to integrate the core values of justice, respect, compassion, excellence, and stewardship into programs and services.

  • Has a record of functioning as a high-impact, low-ego leader who thrives in a team setting, motivated by the advancement of the organization, as well as representing a strong role model and mentor.

  • Displays innovative thinking with vision. Displays excellent conceptual and planning skills appropriate to a position with responsibility for the total continuum of health care delivery services, a health plan, and medical groups.

  • Possesses a balanced understanding of clinical, business, and management requirements for various types of health care services, including knowledge of integrated delivery systems and managed care organizations.

  • Good working knowledge of shared service partners and effective relationships, tech/systems savvy, etc. Be able to quickly develop relationships at all levels of the organization.

  • Understand the sensitivity and timing of changes and be able to communicate the complexity and weight of change that is coming. Need to understand the audience and gain buy-in.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Completion of a Master’s Degree program in Health Administration or Business Administration, or Certificate in Healthcare Management is preferred.
