Providence Health & Services Materials Supply Technician - Medical Supplies in Olympia, Washington


Providence is calling a Materials Supply Technician (Per Diem, On Call Variable shift) to work in Medical Supplies/Distribution at Providence St. Peter Hospital in Olympia, WA.

The Materials Supply Technician will distribute supplies and equipment to all departments of the hospital, inventories and replenishes par and exchange carts, restocks distribution center and surgery supply shelves and performs other related duties in the receiving, surgery supply and distribution center work areas as required. Additional job duties include: Handling, delivery and storage of all materials and freight received through the Southwest Washington Region (SWR) and delivery of bulk orders to user departments and outside agencies in accordance with prescribed policies and procedures including shipping functions of all materials and freight of the hospital. Maintains accurate records, manages receipts for all items delivered to and shipped from the hospital, regulates equipment management and maintains overall cleanliness and organization of the receiving, supply work areas and individual unit storage areas.

In this position you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Pick all supplies to include CS, SI and Distribution, 7 day per week, 24 hours per day. Inventories, replenishes and delivers supplies to all areas within the facility

  • Demonstrate knowledge of medical/surgical instruments, equipment and supplies. Must be familiar with and able to identify a minimum of 6000 items

  • Able to accurately inventory, replenish and deliver correct supplies

  • Provide attention to detail, organizational skills, medical terminology, numbers and descriptions to identify and correctly distribute equipment and supplies

  • Demonstrate ability to respond quickly and cope with stressful situations, including surgical/emergency settings. Knowledge of hospital layout and departments

  • Respond to personal, telephone and electronic requests for supplies, equipment, and/or assistance, including delivery and retrieval. Will perform cycle counts and check expiration dates regularly. Maintain adequate levels of supplies in the supply areas. Assists with the management of inventory levels for PAR carts and supply areas. Put away stock supplies in proper warehouse locations. Follow procedures consistent with department delivery and timing needs and with data tracking requirements imposed by software. Create, update and follow a pattern of regular service to hospital departments

  • Demonstrate knowledge of supplies and location of products in supply areas

  • Able to function under constant pressure from all areas within the hospital

  • Properly label and inventory all supplies. Record patient and departmental issues and credits in real time. Input data on inventories of par carts, issues/credits and generate pick tickets. Clean carts monthly, making sure they are visibly and correctly labeled, with a cart listing attached

  • Demonstrate knowledge of basic computer skills and ability to effectively operate computer to accurately input data

  • Able to use multi-line telephone with paging system, calculator and standard office equipment

  • Demonstrate knowledge of cleaning procedures and chemicals, infection control and biohazard material disposal

  • Label stock items before placing in designated locations in Distribution/Warehouse; frequently checks accuracy of item locations. Rotates stock as items are shelved and periodically for slow moving items. Work with Inventory Control Technician in creating warehouse locations for new stock or relocation of current stock. Accurately pick stock from warehouse in accordance with item number, unit of measure and quantity shown on pick ticket

  • Understand the basic principles of warehousing, i.e., FIFO, outdates, etc.

  • Demonstrate the ability to follow accurate stocking procedures

  • Demonstrate working knowledge of usage patterns to be able to respond to stocking needs

  • Demonstrate organizational skills

  • Able to perform tasks with accuracy

  • Truck Deliveries (as applicable): Drive truck in a manner consistent with state laws and safety considerations. Weekly, check truck fluids and add gas; notify Coordinator of repair or service requirements. Deliver linen, pharmacy and warehouse supplies to departments and clinics located outside of the main Hospital building in accordance with a regular schedule or demand

  • Able to safely operate the vehicle in all circumstances, i.e., able to back safely into a parking area

  • Develop a sense of spatial requirements for truck movement

  • Able to perform basic truck maintenance and communicate service requirements to Coordinator

  • Demonstrate knowledge of location and drop-off procedures for customers within the SWSA

  • Participate in departmental QA/QI activities, problem solving and improvement processes, reporting required data

  • Participate in continuing education experiences

  • Verbalize and identifies department quality improvement and other initiatives

  • Attend department education and initiates self-learning

  • The following are performed as required:

  • Process the sale/purchase or loan/borrow with outside agencies

  • Receipt and delivery of supplies and equipment

  • Assist in the orientation and training of new employees

  • Demonstrate ability to work with patients, managers and clients of various ages’ groups

  • Consider patient, manager/client background and work history to effectuate positive work experience/relationship

  • Respond appropriately according to age related needs and considerations


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Experience in materials management, i.e. warehouse, stock control, and/or computer assisted inventory

Preferred qualifications for this position includes:

  • Coursework/Training: Completion of central service/materials management education (CS certification)

  • Experience in a healthcare setting

  • CS certification
