The Clinical Dietitian is responsible for the nutritional care of patients, nutrition education, and promotion of nutrition services within the hospital. The Dietitian collaborates with members of the health care team to provide appropriate medical nutrition therapy to inpatients.
In this position you will:
Performs the key functions of nutrition care according to system policy including nutrition screening, assessments, development of care plan, and follow-up monitoring/reassessment and documentation of all patients:
Identifies, monitors, and evaluates nutrition support regimens. Competencies assessed via nutrition skills checklist.
Develops and implements transitional feeding plans.
Assesses patients' learning needs, barriers to learning, preferred learning styles, and educational level and provides nutrition education accordingly.
Identifies potential food-drug interactions according to system policy and provides education based on identified need.
Utilizes community resources and programs to assist patients in the plan of care.
Uses education strategies appropriate to patients' needs and site of care.
Facilitates resources throughout the continuum of care to foster patient outcomes.
Develops, implements, and promotes quality services based on client expectation and needs:
Collaborates with the patient and/or family member, and health care team to assess nutrition and education needs of patients.
Provides services and establishes goals based on the identified needs of patients and/or family members.
Applies knowledge and skills in developing, implementing and maintaining nutrition programs.
Advocates for the provision of food and nutrition services as part of patient care.
Continuously evaluates nutrition care processes and patient outcomes.
Implements quality practice by following system policies, procedures, practice guidelines, MNT protocols.
Provides care according to organizational ethics, licensure, and the Standards of Professional Practice for Dietetics Professionals.
Applies JCAHO and/or other regulatory standards in the provision of nutrition services.
Effectively applies, participates in or generates research to enhance practice:
Locates and reviews research findings for their application to optimally manage a disease or condition and improve patient outcomes.
Bases clinical practice on sound scientific principles, current research and theory.
Participates in and promotes research through alliances and in collaboration with health care team members of the organization.
Continually collects, analyzes and evaluates patient outcomes and documents the outcomes of care based on system policy.
Shares and reports research and patient outcomes utilizing various media.
Applies knowledge and communicates effectively with others:
Demonstrates knowledge related to clinical practice.
Communicates sound scientific principles, research, and theory to health care team members and dietetic interns/students in optimally managing patients' care.
Shares knowledge and expertise with dietetic interns/students, patients, families and health care team members.
Serves as a preceptor and helps dietetic interns/students and clients apply nutrition knowledge and skills.
Documents understanding of relevant information and results of communication with dietetic interns/technicians/students, patients, families and health care team members.
Contributes to the development of new knowledge and services.
Seeks out information effectively and independently to provide effective services.
Uses resources effectively and efficiently in practice:
Uses a systematic approach to maintain and manage resources effectively.
Utilizes system practice guidelines, protocols, references, and the nutrition care manual in the provision of nutrition services.
Considers safety, effectiveness and cost in providing and delivering nutrition services and products.
Justifies use of resources by documenting consistency with plan and desired outcomes.
Actively utilizes data collected for performance improvement to improve patient care and nutrition processes.
Informs and educates patients, families, health care team members, dietetic interns/students to identify and secure available resources to achieve necessary goals.
May supervise and mentor dietetic technicians in completing identified tasks and responsibilities.
Required qualifications for this position include:
Bachelor’s Degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, or Food and Nutrition Science, from an accredited school or Advanced degree in Nutrition, Dietetics, or Food and Nutrition Science, from an accredited school.
Registered Dietitian/Nutritionist (RDN) status or eligible by the Commission on Registration of the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics (to obtain RDN status within 90 days of hire)
Preferred qualifications for this position include:
1 year of experience in acute care.
3 months of experience in medical charting in acute care or long-term care; schooling may be applied as clinical experience
