Providence Health & Services RN Clinician- Palliative Care in Olympia, Washington


Providence is calling an experienced Registered Nurse to be an RN Clinician in our Palliative Care Department at Providence St Peter Hospital in Olympia, WA.

We are seeking a compassionate and caring Registered Nurse (RN) to provide direct clinical support, education and development, and case management for Palliative Care Services in the Inpatient hospital and Outpatient clinic or Facility setting.

This is a .6 FTE (24 hours per week), dayshift position.

The Palliative Care RN assists the Palliative Care Service team in responding to and triaging and assigning referrals; educating/mentoring nurses and other clinicians and non-clinicians in evidence-based palliative care; assisting the Care Coordinator in discharge planning and/or entry into the hospice program; and functioning as a case manager for patients throughout the continuum of care.

The Palliative Care RN may be required to travel to select sites in the Southwest Washington Region to provide care and program development.

In this position you will:

  • Optimize quality care for patients receiving palliative care and/or end-of-life and communicates this in action and word.

  • Triage new consults for Palliative Care and assigns priority, as well as clinician to see patient.

  • Contact patients to schedule and reschedule missed appointments.

  • Serve as liaison between the primary physician, palliative care clinician and the patient.

  • Identify patients that need navigation and assistance with barriers, such as lack of insurance, financial issues, need for personal support, language, and any other problems that may arise and initiates appropriate referrals.

  • Retrieve medical records as needed.

  • Work collaboratively with MSW/Case manager to eliminate barriers for accessing care.

  • Work collaboratively with medical and community resources to address the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs of the patient.

  • Develops curricula and teaches classes to ensure competency development of interdisciplinary team.

  • Mentor/educate clinical staff and other professional students in principals of palliative care.


Required qualifications for this position include:

  • Associates in Nursing Degree.

  • WA State Registered Nursing license.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers certification issued by the American Heart Association.

  • Three years of RN experience in a hospital setting with a background in medical, oncology, or hospice nursing.

  • ELNEC Core Training and/or Hospice Education Network core curriculum training OR the ability to complete training within 6 months of hire.

  • Actively work to complete Hospice of Palliative Care Nursing Certification within two years of hire.

  • Proficiency in speaking, reading, and writing English.

  • Proficient at using a computer, Excel preferred.

  • Experience in staff development, education, and precepting nurses and other clinicians.

Preferred qualifications for this position include:

  • Bachelors or Masters Degree in nursing.

  • RN experience in Palliative Care.
